What's All The Hype About Foam Rolling?

You've seen people using them at the gym, they show up on your favourite fitness Instagram and Facebook feeds and you've scanned articles written about them in every health magazine. So, what exactly is all the hype about these things called foam rollers? Well, there actually is a very good reason why they are getting so much attention in the health and wellness world lately. When used as a part of your regular exercise regime, there are a plethora of health benefits for you (beyond just making your muscles feel looser).

Read on for all of the top reasons why you should jump on the foam rolling bandwagon and try it out for yourself.

Aids in myofascial release, circulation & detoxification

Using a foam roller regularly can help with releasing our myofascial tissues (muscles, soft tissues and fascia) much like a deep massage can. When we roll our tissues over the roller, we are effectively releasing the restricted fibres and scar tissue that have been built up in our tissues over time (from exercise, repetitive use, poor postures and daily activities). One of the ways that this occurs is improved circulation to the tissues that are being rolled. The benefit of this is that circulation carries oxygen and nutrients into the tissues and removes the built up carbon dioxide and toxins from the tissues. Another benefit of rolling is improved lymphatic drainage which further aids in our bodies detoxification.

Helps reduce cellulite!

Because cellulite is really just a result of toxic build up, congestion, dehydration and poor circulation in our tissues, foam rolling in the areas prone to cellulite (thighs, tummy and back of the arms) can actually help combat this unwanted phenomenon by all of the reasons listed above!

Improves mobility of the mid-back and improves posture (especially for those of us who sit at a desk all day!)

We all know how much discomfort we feel in our mid-back area after a day of sitting at our desks, commuting, and — let’s be honest — binging on social media. We can dramatically improve the mobility of the vertebrae in these tight areas by rolling our spine along a foam roller for a minute or two, especially after a particularly long day.

Contributes to relaxation & overall well-being

By releasing tension in our restricted muscles, using a foam roller can help our bodies relax. As an added bonus, when tissue knots (known to us Physio’s as trigger points) are released, endorphins (our bodies natural pain relievers and feel good hormones) are also released. This can lead to an enhanced feeling of relaxation and an improvement in our overall well-being. They can even be considered a major contributor to personal self-care!

Helps us tap into our inner core muscles

By essentially destabilizing us when performing exercises using the foam roller, we are able to better tap into our intrinsic or “core” muscles. This benefits us in many ways including improved posture and body mechanics, reduced risk of injury (especially our low back and hips but also common upper and lower body overuse injuries), improved balance, improved performance in sport and activities and even helps tone our abs and obliques (bonus!).
